Harriet Rowley Elementary School Mount Vernon, WA

A School in the Forest

Mount Vernon School District had not built a new school in twenty years. When Harriet Rowley Elementary, it carried that weight quietly and well. Tucked into a wooded 15-acre parcel, the 75,000 square foot building serves 550 students in grades K-5 and marked the beginning of something new for the district, a steppingstone and temporary home for students awaiting the completion of Madison Elementary nearby.

Rooted in Its Setting

The forest was not a backdrop. It was a beginning. The design draws directly from the site, letting the landscape set the tone for everything that followed. Timber harvested from the clearing was re-milled and returned to the building as interior signage and outdoor features, wood that once stood in this place now lining the halls where children learn to read. The materials throughout bring warmth and durability together, a school that feels less like it was placed here and more like it belongs.

Spaces That Connect

Inside, an interior bridge links two pairs of classroom and activity wings, stitching together a floor plan that moves naturally between learning and gathering. Outside, playfields open to a walking path, a covered play area, and an outdoor classroom where the trees remain close. For young students stepping through the doors for the first time, the building offers something no program document captures: the quiet feeling of being somewhere made for you.
